I've had this book in my own collection for years, being that I'm from the Arizona desert originally. It's a spin on the classic Wadsworth Over in the Meadow song/story, but with a super cool twist of having a number hidden on each page. Ooh, we went a bit nuts over that one as it was just the right amount of challenge for the little ones. Plus, we learned lots about desert animals. Mostly, they loved the cadence of the song, and I looked out to see every single one of their faces just mesmerized. It sent us on a mission to find and read as many versions of the song/story as we could.

We read Over on the Farm and Over in the Meadow and again, they loved the melody and rhythm. Still, Way Out in the Desert was our favorite because of finding the numbers. So glad they loved one of my favorites!Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-58284557716626685582013-03-07T21:34:00.000-08:002013-03-07T21:34:08.450-08:00No-Bot

What's not to love about this book? Robots + bottom humor is a perfect match for just about any age, and this book was a huge hit with my students. No-Bot has lost his bottom on the swing and searches high and low for it around his neighborhood. Seems that everyone else has found different uses for it (I am always trying to get my students to think creatively about what something might be used for, so this was a great teaching moment!), and he finally does find it at the end. Only then he loses another body part. Fun and fabulous, No-Bot could be used for many different grades.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-39048122830896817722013-02-28T23:28:00.001-08:002013-02-28T23:28:06.641-08:00Big Green Monster

For years, I have loved Ed Emberley's drawing books for kids, but I somehow missed out on this fabulous book of his until recently. It's awesome for many reasons-- great focus on parts of the body for EAL learners, (most) kids love anything with monsters, and the cutouts in the book make it extra fun.

Now that I know the song, I find that I can't read the book anymore. I have to sing as it's folky and cute!

Who doesn't love Mo Willems? I love how many of his books can go across grade levels seamlessly, and we are huge fans of anything Gerald and Piggie do. When I used this book with K4, it was a smashing success. All the repetition, the concept of making a friend, and the oh-so-fabulous "BLARGIE! BLARGIE!" monster page--it was all wonderful. This was another book that they immediately took to reading on their own. For a few weeks there, there was a whole lot of "Blargie! Blargie!" going on in our classrooms. I'm thinking I'll check this one out again since we are knee deep in rhyming at the moment...

For some reason, the rest of the series was not as much a hit as this one. Perhaps it was the lack of Blargie! Blargie!

I'm a sucker for books that look really new in a library, and this book by the author of the Llama Llama series looked nice and shiny and just right for the K4 cuties. They ate it up and loved the rhyming and roly-poly, shy pangolin stuff. What I loved about it as a teacher is that there was tons of information about pangolins (all new to me since I had never heard of one before) that was shown only in the illustrations. We could look together to see what they eat (ants) and how they eat (with their tongue).

Always on the lookout for fiction books with nonfiction information tucked in the pages...Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-16937989807920298882013-02-23T21:24:00.002-08:002013-02-23T21:27:46.677-08:00Jan Thomas LoveI've been a fan of Jan Thomas' work since I first stumbled on her book, The Doghouse, at our local library a few summers ago. Kids adore her silliness and amazing illustrations, but her books are also chocked full of teachable moments.

We are currently LOVING Jan's work in K4, and here is what I am noticing from the wee ones:

1. They are making tons of connections between her various books, be it with characters or speech bubbles or rhyming. Sometimes we take longer to come up and show the connections than we do to actually read the book.

2. Little ones love the concept of ellipses (...) and how they make us wait just a little bit longer to see what will happen. I love reading Is Everyone Ready for Fun? and having them say aloud, "dot, dot, dot."

Our newest favorite is this one--it's not a rhyming book, but it's cheeky and hilarious and we are nuts over it. I'm so excited to share this basket of fun with the K4 Cuties tomorrow. We'll act it out with finger puppets from Jan's website! And just look at that cute couch for the cows to jump on and dance on like they do in the book.

Jan Thomas' work is not just for the tiny ones. It is witty and funny enough to work with older students as they will get her humor even more.

This book was sheer magic with my 4 year olds. A little girl asks her dad to push her higher and higher on a swing, and she winds up going all the way into outer space. My students were giddy with how silly this was each time she went higher, and when she meets an alien kid in space who is also on a swing, well, that was the best part for them. We read it many times together, and this is one of those books I love because I read it to the kids and then they can immediately go and read it themselves. I have a video of a little boy in my class saying, "Higher! Higher!" and there is a good chance they were his first English words. Cutest part was his voice was exactly like mine.

This wordless book is such fun, and the drawings are so realistic. A group of children head to the park on a rainy day to find a bag of sidewalk chalk hanging from a dinosaur toy's mouth. They soon discover that whatever they draw comes to life (this part was downright fascinating to my students), which can be fun or can be dangerous, depending on what you draw!

On our reading table, this is one of the books that was read over and over and over. Even months after I had to return it to the library, my students still talk about this book, and my kindergarten daughter also loves it. One student recently came up to me, and with her limited English said, "Dinosaur...book." It took me a minute to figure out she meant Chalk, but it was so cool that she loved it so much. Our library copy is checked out, but this will definitely be one book I will buy for our own classroom.

This blog that is so dear to me has been on hiatus for a while now. My family and I moved from Thailand to Saudi Arabia, and my new job is teaching PreK and not in the library. Because of that, I have not been sure what to do with the blog. After we took some time to settle in here, I am ready to switch gears with it for a while and turn it into an early literacy book recommendation blog. I know when I was in the library, it was sometimes difficult to find those fabulous books that just clicked with the wee ones--they have a lot of wiggles and very small attention spans. Since that is my life now, I have a ton of great recommendations!

But, before I start telling you about those books, I thought I would close the last chapter by sharing this gorgeous note a 2nd grader left on my library desk in Bangkok. He had just arrived from Finland, and his English was just emerging, but when I read the note, (it says--"I love what you have done with the place") I asked him what he meant. He swept his arm out in this grand gesture to show the whole library and said,

"This. I just love what you have done with it."

Well, I could not think of a better compliment from a kid than to love his library and the way it made him feel. I keep the note with me in my wallet now until I find the perfect tiny frame to put it in.

Our grades 4 and 5 students are suffering (in a good way!) with a serious case of Amulet fever! The books are always on hold, and personal copies are being loaned as well. Personally, this series was the turning point for me with graphic novels. I now get the beauty, the engagement and the near-obsession that some readers have with this genre. Reading Amulet is like watching a stunning movie unfold in front of your eyes.

After some months of trying to put it all together, we had our final skype chat of the year with Kazu Kibuishi and Jason Caffoe. These guys were so cool, so accessible and so down-to-earth that our 30 minutes flew by, and we could have talked for hours. The kids were talking about it all day long, and we are all anxiously awaiting the arrival of #5 in the series to come out.

This was the year I was not only sold on graphic novels, but my love of skyping with authors was solidified. More and more authors are willing to do it (this was Kazu's first skype call), and it's such a great way for students to feel enpowered. Twice now, they have written a persuasive letter to an author that resulted in a skype call. Love that!

Here's the trailer to Amulet--an awesome addition to any library.
Grrrr! This coupled with various other infractions have led Chrissy and I to do some major technology triage! We spent one class period in the library reviewing the AUP terms of agreement with all second and third graders and re-signed a huge poster version of the AUP. This now hangs in the Hub as a reminder.

But I wanted to take something negative and turn it into something fun and positive where they could teach other students how to behave appropriately. I searched for some easy cartoon sites and stumbled upon Go Animate. It's my new favorite site for kids as it is so easy and fun.

In our second lesson, we spoke about what our message would be in the video, and it had to be one of the terms of the AUP that we were struggling with. We then did a shared writing exercise that included the dialogue. It was so cute because #1 character was the cheeky one and #2 was the wise one. Cheeky person had to be cheeky twice before realizing the error of his/her way and making a better choice. And for some really bizarre reason that only second graders would do (one of the reasons I love this age), the first class decided they would end it with going to get some "computer flavored ice cream." This led to every class ending with going to get some item of food that tasted like a computer. Funny how none of them thought that eating something that tasted like a computer might not be delicious. Suffice it to say there was a lot of laughing in the last few days.

Here are a few samples of videos we made. Please note in this one that the characters go to get an "electric special cappucino" at Starbucks after making this grave mistake.
There is an innocence in their dialogues that is so precious. Almost like their recent Destiny Quest cheekiness was just because they all forgot. I don't know what it's called, but I love them and so do the kids. Recently, I received a new book that I am sharing with everyone from PreK to 5th grade. At every age level, there is equal enthusiasm and fascination.
I paired it with Little Pink Pup that I discovered on We Give Books last year, and I like the 'real' copy even more than the online version. Wow.

The father/son book club turned out to be one of the highlights of my time at ISB. The intro activity of choosing our characteristics was simple yet special enough to get the night started on a great note. But it was the conversation that had me in awe--it was deep and thoughtful and insightful and so incredibly mature. This book has so many things to talk about that we never even got to the questions I had written ahead of time, plus the boys touched on many of them in their organic talk. What struck me was how the minute we started talking, we were all just people--not dads, kids and a teacher--just people. I chuckled when one boy said, "Um, I have to disagree with Nick in his last statement" and Nick was another boy's dad. The boys were book club rock stars.

All dads in my group, except for one, admitted freely that they cried at the end of the book. One dad even bought six copies of the book for adult friends because he felt it was that important.

On a reflective note, I love that I took enough time to find the right book and thankfully did not choose a fluff book just to get boys on board. This book felt perfect.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-60918037660603435122012-05-01T03:21:00.001-07:002012-05-01T03:21:30.541-07:00Father/Son Book Club, Part OneAfter the success of our mother/daughter book club in the fall, I knew I wanted to do a father/son book club as well. The original plan was to have the title chosen by December so everyone could buy the book over break. Well, January came and no title. February came, and still no title. I was completely stuck. After tons of reflection, I realized while trying to find the perfect "sporty-yet-funny-while-grabbing-everyone-including-the-one-reluctant-reader-who-might-join-the-book-club" title, what I was really doing was selling boys short. Why on earth wouldn't I choose a quality, thought-provoking novel for boys like I automatically did for the girls?

This epiphany led me to choosing what was the most perfect title for our club: Wonder by RJ Palacios. I read it the moment it was released (literally the moment), and the feedback I have received from the boys and dads thus far has been nothing short of amazing. I even had one email from a dad that said he was up until 1:00 a.m. finishing the books with tears streaming down his face.

Here's the plan for the evening:

1. After getting food, the boys and dads will take sticky notes and write down two adjectives that describe them. They will add these to our mural and then write one adjective about each other. I'll add their photos to the mural as the finishing touch.

2. We are going to watch the video Kindness Thought Bubble by Amy Krouse Rosenthal as a starter.

3. We'll divide into two groups and use some questions I made as guiding questions. I'm so curious to see where the conversation goes, though, as this book is so rich with things to talk about.

4. We'll finish up with a few questions we might ask the author if we had that opportunity.

Can't wait!Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-73988212279066082522012-04-10T21:38:00.002-07:002012-04-11T20:33:31.498-07:00Personality Predicting + Wordle = Cool!We have been immersing ourselves in Amy Krouse Rosenthal's work, both book and video format, in anticipation of her upcoming visit. Many of us feel like we have a sense of who she is from her work. So...we started brainstorming adjectives to describe what we predict will be Amy's personality. Such a cool exercise. That being said, I loved the Glogster poster our HS librarian made for a visiting author, so I asked for a tutorial to get my head around it.

And what do you know? Maybe it was just having someone sit next to me while I worked (that is always so nice, isn't it? just in case you have questions...), but I now LOVE Glogster. L.O.V.E.

And this poster for our upcoming visit from Amy Krouse Rosenthal--it's the coolest thing I've seen in a while! I've printed them out and am hanging them around the school to get us all pumped for her upcoming visit.

Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-6916670848335317622012-03-14T18:00:00.002-07:002012-03-16T06:09:01.630-07:00Student EmpowermentWe've been on a Skype frenzy this year. Between using the Skype an Author website to meet with John Himmelman and Jean Marzollo to booking a meeting with Avi as part of our 4th grade author study unit, our kids are making deep, meaningful connections to the books they are reading.

Lately, there has been a surge of empowerment among our older students. First, a group of 4th graders approached me about meeting with their author, Bruce Coville, from the author study unit. We sat down and crafted a persuasive email to him. And then a group of 5th grade boys wrote a persuasive letter to Kazu Kibuishi of Amulet fame, convincing him to skype with their class since the book love of Amulet has gone viral. They even included their "spread like wildfire" chart to show just how much they have made the book popular at ISB. I received an email from his agent that said they loved the persuasive writing and that Kazu would love to meet with us. Just imagine the excitement at seeing that response.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgupkJni4GVfIx-u6TtyRZOH9lYTiddFdSjRqRLgjgB3Iqi-C4bzllJAKKLhzBt0dXri3mYbCUJF7G6KELaw13LbcUXbvx8bz8BOmZ3IiJRwP2JFqkpxBEDPKVvmLacuXbzoejhIZip4A8/s320/DSCN2128.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5719922746278638610" />

My hope is that we have lots more Skype calls in our future. Lots of good stuff going on!

After months and months of waiting (somewhat patiently on my part), Follett has released their iPad app for virtual checkout using Follett Shelf. We had a sneak peek at how it works with our Follett rep, and I'm pretty pleased with how smooth it is. There is a tiny lag in the page turning, but it is swipe technology, and that was the selling point for me. Today I received my order of a few trial books.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 212px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtfcMKIPhyGewtOxXo-LHFewc1a1jWMSLUoloMO9ZT9bC7juCEg8jr5ONLDatu6CkXzNmHv22V3qYc5HBxYPNIKaGtI7jHPMjrNv2j9fqHy_nl3DmFX8oMqaqWgoTNjFmrfY4dykMQMYU/s400/Screen+shot+2012-03-08+at+4.04.14+PM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5717450423521385106" />

Next steps are practicing with our trial books and then launching into parent and student education. The only downside I see right now is that patrons cannot put books on hold. My fear is that our market for virtual checkout will fade if patrons have to go back again and again to see what is in. With Overdrive, I put lots of books on hold and then have that nice treat of receiving an email notification that my book is in. If not, I would forget to go back.

More soon! There has been lots of tech/library/classroom teacher collaborating in the last few months with digital book trailers and grade 5 students. I'd love to share all the steps of how we made it work.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-53903692138003118372011-12-14T02:18:00.001-08:002011-12-14T02:21:00.681-08:00Library LoveOh, how I love our library team. I knew then and there that I had to find a way to make this a priority in our Hub this school year. After much reading, I decided on The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z by Kate Messner. It is filled with such beautiful writing and a bit of mother/daughter conflict, and it proved to be a great choice for discussion. This time around, we invited 4th and 5th grade girls and their mothers to be a part of the evening. There was so much love in the room that it had me choked up as I welcomed everyone.

Part of the Gianna Z book is about how Gianna and her friend Zig look at everyone and give them tree names depending on their personalities. Our homework was to bring a photo of a tree that represented each of us, which we then added to our group mural. We even had one grandma who sent leaves all the way from Germany to her granddaughter so she could scatter them on our mural.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi25gq4FgTTwcv23N2l_j_2X9p0TnWFUdQjEU09vwcVw7pPDqVxIRWkRJfmWLQanYITsEDcC7PzuAuDX6c2MBU29JniaVNiUPN5LA0BOhrL47cLWm237nfeAAKjIhhDJikwWXtcX5lfFH4/s320/DSCN0174.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681804311307764546" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3TZeBvUJoFmwg82R7gkpkEOmZA6HjozbkqZvAzG5sCMFLwr7kBenIIXNNR_h6hwBethk0D6BJMKNCdoJSA3dONRwNXaspiV4j2jQDrFAaxU6OfEMVrm4GsiRADv6SvpQHWr0OEaBofSc/s320/DSCN0175.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681804303895911554" />

Our evening schedule was set up like so:

1. Eat Italian wedding cookies (they feature in the book often), drink hot chocolate and add your tree picture to the mural.

2. Have your photo taken with mom

3. We then broke into small groups of six and answered the questions we provided. Our idea was to ensure that everyone was comfortable and providing questions is a good way to do that. The back of the book had amazing questions, and we used those.

4. After about 20 minutes or so, we gathered as a group again to list some comments and questions for Kate herself. She graciously donates 10 free minutes on Skype, and we were set to meet with her the following week. The girls had thoughtful questions and tons of them!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCX8f_IC0BXmwUE_u_d0H6vpQOUuu-zlg5Hgvn2y702EdH0QG_S7tFrhCvei9tyqIPGAjYzZH7_olDK_q3YQn5hqqO4zWfO-S3zjyQOGDzKo8Yzro7fDQLYhs5HCzrB5PEsQsXm8Kgmf4/s320/DSCN0162.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681804319044721282" />

Now for the father/son book club planned for the spring. A simple conversation with a classroom teacher about how her class had so deeply connected to Barbara O'Connor's book Greetings from Nowhere led to an intimate Skype call with Barbara less than a week later. The students had so many thoughtful questions to ask her, and she was delightful and dynamic. It was the perfect way to wrap up a powerful read aloud.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQhq3pxJe0tZyYnqhAMZ0axncdpsbQzVxb2iCmhlrDn7mxuglI-2v_-tlwdyhLusdmVfsOgbhFcpwYRM10vxKanOt6Rbfqzd8y6kH6qFRexJDJEGMWDnmWIPnJaUeHFdN27V-MbpR1K-Y/s320/6193879099_183fe29f84_z.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681516567741768370" />Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-39743603388076979282011-11-09T17:04:00.000-08:002011-11-09T17:13:03.507-08:00The HubmobileSadly, most of Bangkok is underwater at the moment, and our school was closed unexpectedly for two weeks. It has the cool, old-school bulletin board look and enough space for me to include all their thoughtful words to share with librarians soon.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 181px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb4t84DYMylZyFL5Io_TVglEmY3nfkmt1o3CyD8naAYQjNoYWnLcHds6s6W8kp991sZ2D9gBTvnDgAxNFrDwmSY31Yy2Qt2Ndnou1AguF1IdaE22cKDFe6c-F4Qh5WusE2IqSBxgxtd2U/s400/Screen+shot+2011-11-07+at+9.07.32+PM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5672256389183392130" />

Here is the actual link to see all their writing.Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-627626396225868813.post-79907475041485434842011-10-31T06:32:00.000-07:002011-10-31T06:43:14.083-07:00Double the Fun<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 187px; height: 187px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfdZWpo2PPu5IUsJvV12XjvmD4ePjhyphenhyphen3UBBrhyphenhyphenkpbgIMS3VcagRboaKHVq3xujMlJvy9jwkOa3KRSTO-h5Cpg7oLwfxthsqYDYKVTco1x56X99q6UvnHyEURK7BfeRXcnSbX4p6ZfGkl4/s320/not-a-box-by-antoinette-portis.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669649452572786658" />
A while back, I ordered a book called Not a Box and loved it. All that creativity in one short book was great, but how would I use it in the library when it was just a quick book to share?

Enter the fabulous website called Draw a Stickman, recommended by my friend Laura. Since both the book and the website are all about creativity, it was a perfect combination. I read the book*, we brainstormed some activities that make us feel creative**, and then I showed them the website and did it together. (I won't spoil the fun here as surprise is everything, so please try it yourself!) We then had enough time for everyone to play on the site themselves before checking out. Double the creativity. Love it!

*What took me by surprise is that I read this all the way up to 3rd grade, and everyone ate it up.

**Their answers for what makes them feel creative were so cool. My favorite was a 1st grader who said, I feel creative when I ask questions. Like when I asked my mom why the walls don't just fall down. Then I felt creative."Tarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09220132849684132068noreply@blogger.com2
